Art is Essential to Community Building

The divine bleeds through the mundane. From the moment you wake up and make your bed, or listen to your favorite artist on your way to work, or watch a movie to wind down at the end of a long day, you are experiencing something that, though can be explained scientifically, is transcendent beyond the here-and-now.

Artistry is a window into the unknown. It’s the language that translates truth into more malleable terms. It’s the image that makes us feel something, even though we can’t fully explain what it is. Bad movies are bad because they are not true; they fail to let us peek into the unknown. Good artists see the mundane and express it in terms that move us, expressing what is so inexpressible.

This is why artistry is indispensable to community building. It allows us to momentarily shift our perspective to better understand others. Yes, diversity is strength, but without empathy, it can only be divisive. Instead, when we seek out to empathize with others, we are one step closer to the truth.

When the world spirals out of control, when we find ourselves unable to express our feelings, look beyond the here-and-now. Artistry is the antidote for a divided society. Express yourself through your craft and listen to others through theirs. Create, don’t hate.
