The following list is taken from our last podcast post at the Wishing Well.

This list contains some of our favorite movies of the decade. The list goes in order of mention at it is not ranked in any manner. Let’s begin:

The Master (2012)
Even though you can’t really grasp everything, it definitely intrigues you. You don’t know where it’s going.

A Separation (2011)
Our favorite foreign movie of the decade. Set in a place that we don’t fully understand that develops honest and nuanced characters.

Melancholia (2011)
A composed film that keeps you on edge, always expecting a twist, slowly revealing the true theme of the movie.

Blue Valentine (2010)
Well structured and depicts failing relationships in an honest manner. Makes you feel and makes you think.

Ex-Machina (2014)
Even though big ideas are thrown around, the movie excels at maintaining a focused and sophisticated narrative.

Midsommar (2019)
Ari Aster takes an unconventional setting and crafts a thought-provoking, gut-wrenching rollercoaster of emotions.

Frances Ha (2012)
If Eighth Grade depicts the Gen-Z generation flawlessly, then millennials can more closely relate with Frances Ha. A good mumblecore about being lost in the world.

The Social Network (2010)
Jose’s favorite movie of all time. Well-paced, entertaining, depicts the teens and its ambitious culture.

The Tree of Life (2011)
A true masterpiece. It will go down in history as one of the most important. What other movie makes you appreciate life more than this?

The Embrace of the Serpent (2015)
An epic adventure into the amazon. A mature, cinematic and magical experience.

The Florida Project (2017)
Realistic, natural with a well-structured flow. Portrays a group of people we had not yet seen represented on the silver screen.

It Follows (2015)
Intriguing stylization. Creative utilization of the horror tropes.

Black Swan (2010)
Great overarching plot that keeps you tense throughout the entire picture.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)
Witty and entertaining. Not a boring second in the entire experience.

Mustang (2015)
An intriguing story, with an intense progression. Really nostalgic coming of age.

Carol (2015)
Aesthetically powerful and romantic. A well-crafted and inviting narrative.

Eighth Grade (2018)
The best coming of age film of the decade. Depicts Gen-Z angst in a multi-generational relatable terms.

Gone Girl (2014)
Fincher flexes his mystery muscles to pull off one of the most intriguing, well-structured and twisted movies.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
It’s Fincher theme hour. Gut-wrenching and raw. Who else could have adapted this novel but him?

A Marriage Story (2019)
An honest portrayal of relationships. Extremely well-acted, directed and writing. A strong Oscar contender.
